First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei Owusu has dismissed claims that Members of Parliament (MPs) are bribed into accepting the nominees of the President.

The approval of some ministerial nominees was criticized because of what some describe as their poor showing during vetting.

The endorsement of minister-designates Ken Ofofi-Atta, Hawa Koomson, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah and Dr Owusu Afriyie-Akoto despite opposition further heightened concerns about possible palm greasing in the House.

But speaking to JoyNews’ Emefa Apawu, the Bekwai legislator said MPs only do their work.

“Unfortunately, we have become too corrupt as a country, nobody accepts that you can do something genuinely without thinking about your palm being greased or that you are being promised something.

“But that is not it when it comes to Parliament,” he stressed.

Mr. Osei Owusu also indicated that parliament will investigate circumstance that led to the disturbances that characterized the election of the Speaker.
“We will investigate for the purpose of informing ourselves and guarding our seats. The [Parliament] Marshall will bring a report.

“All of us witnessed the fights but it is important for the record to put together the specific acts of individuals so that in the end, we will be guided by what has happened,” he said.
