The voter identity (ID) card replacement for individuals impacted by the Akosombo dam spill will be provided free of charge, according to the Electoral Commission (EC).
The EC was urged to replace voter ID cards that victims of the recent Akosombo dam spillage lost for free, and this announcement was made in response to Fifi Kwetey, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
At a press conference on Thursday, May 16, Mr. Kwetey emphasized the gravity of the situation and urged the EC to act quickly and humanely.
The EC emphasized in a statement issued that same day that it is a responsible commission and will assist all eligible voters in taking part in the upcoming general election.
“The replacement of voter ID cards which is scheduled to commence from 30th May 2024 is intended to fulfil that duty,” it added
“Recognizing the untold hardships and economic loss suffered by victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage, we agree with Fifi Kwetey of the NDC to support them,” the EC said, concurring with Mr. Kwetey’s proposal.
“In solidarity with the victims and as a gesture of goodwill, the commission is happy to announce that replacement of voter ID cards for victims of the Akosombo dam spillage will be free of charge.”
