Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, Volta Regional Minister on Monday filed his 2018 annual tax returns and urged others to faithfully pay their taxes as required by law.
He said government could undertake developmental projects such as good roads, markets, hospitals, educational infrastructure only when the citizenry honoured their tax obligations to the state and pleaded for adherence to the tax law.
The Minister noted that mobilising adequate domestic revenue was significant in helping government to achieve its vision of Ghana Beyond Aid, which included; striving for self-financing and called for support from all.
Mr Kwame Owusu Bamfo, Head of Medium Tax Payer office at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) said the rights and responsibilities of the citizenry were inseparable thus imperative for everyone to honour civic duties just as they enjoyed the rights.
He said persons who filed tax returns stood to enjoy benefits such as opportunity to claim personal tax reliefs to reduce the quantum of tax paid, claim capital allowances on business assets, claim tax refund for overpaid taxes, get a fair and reasonable assessment from GRA and apply for tax clearance certificate from GRA for various purposes.
Mr Bamfo said the Income Tax Act, 2015 (ACT 896) mandated all income earning persons to file their annual tax returns for the previous year by 30th April, and called on all to honour such obligations to the State.
He said the GRA would soon go all out to identify, locate and bring into the tax net all persons earning income, but unwilling to honour civic obligation and also ensure “full application of sanctions for failure to file annual tax returns on due dates”.
