Due to new threats against LGBTQI+ people in Ghana, the US Embassy has updated its travel advisory to Level 2, advising travelers to “exercise increased caution.”
The alert, which was released on November 20, draws attention to worries regarding crimes and acts of violence that are purportedly targeted at Ghanaian LGBTQI+ citizens.
Citing civil unrest, the advisory particularly identified areas with purportedly increased risks, including portions of the Bono East, Bono, Savannah, Northern, North East, and Upper East regions.
The embassy issues a warning against violent crimes like carjacking and street mugging, highlighting the fact that these incidents frequently take place at night and in remote areas.
For more information, travelers are urged by the embassy to look over the Human Rights Report and visit its LGBTQI+ Travel Information page. It also recommended reading Ghana’s Country Security Report and registering for emergency alerts through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). It is advised that travelers make emergency plans and monitor the Department of State’s social media accounts for updates.
