The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana Legon, Professor Ebenezer Odro Owusu, has said that the management of the university will intensify security measures to protect the lives of students following an attack on a level 400 student, Sunday evening.
The attack took place along the pentagon James Nelson lecture hall road.
Addressing the media after a tour of the crime scene, Professor Odro revealed that plans have been made for a strong collaboration with the Ghana Police Service to beef up security at the university.
He said that the institution values human lives and will not take things for granted. As a result of this, the institution has taken several security measures and has called on all students to cooperate with the security.
“The MC is here I’ve spoken to the National Security Minister……we value human life and we will not take things for granted…..so when we roll out the strategies we expect them to cooperate with security,” he said.
He added that the institution has received assurance from the police that the security intervention is not going to be a one day activity but a long term measure.
Background
Three suspected armed robbers attacked some students at the university campus on Sunday dawn and injured a final year student called Daniel Osei.
Daniel is a level 400 Students of the University who went out to get food after studies with other colleagues after studying deep into the night.
They were reportedly attacked by persons suspected to be armed robbers along the road leading from Pentagon to the Evandy hostel which is situated on the University campus.
Daniel sustained cutlass wounds on his arms and head and is currently receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.
His other colleagues managed to flee the attack unharmed.
According to the police, one suspect has been arrested based on intelligence.
The Director of Operations for the Greater Accra Police, ACP Kwesi Ofori explained that the police have taken over investigations and are working assiduously to arrest other suspects if there are any.
ACP Ofori said the police have joined forces with the internal security of the university in a bid to increase patrol on the campus.
“…we are deploying patrol teams and assault motorbikes to patrol the entire corridor of the university and other places of interest,” the officer said.
Reactions from students
According to some of the students of the institution, management has not been able to act properly in relation to security issues.
They complained students still feel unsafe when they are on campus despite the assurances from the authorities.
They called on the management to hold on to its promise of improving security on campus.
