Uber Ghana says it is prepared to engage its driver community to ensure the success of their businesses.
This follows a threat by Online Drivers Union Ghana to embark on a week-long demonstration over what they describe as modern-day slavery methods used by their app operators to frustrate their work.
In a statement issued by the Online Drivers Union Ghana, the associations explained that though there have been several increments in the prices of fuel; riders continue to enjoy discounts from their app operators which affect their daily sales.
The online drivers use various internet applications such as Uber, Yango, Bolt and First Class for their operation. The drivers accused the ride-hailing apps of not making any form of salary payment to them, thus making it difficult to make a profit and make their daily sales.
The drivers are also demanding their car owners to reduce the weekly sales from GHS400 to GHS300. They have therefore indicated their reluctance to make sales to car owners this week and also demonstrate this week to register their displeasure.
However in a statement, one of the ride-hailing companies, Uber Ghana said it constantly monitors fares, examines consumer price sensitivities and driver economics in Ghana to ensure that fares are reasonably priced.
According to Uber Ghana, drivers have access to rewards and incentives that help them to reduce cost and keep more of their earnings. The company noted that it will engage the drivers in a roundtable discussion to address their concerns.
