The Trade Workers Union Congress (TUC) has denied mobilizing various work unions for a protest on 1st May, 2019 to mark the May Day celebrations.
An official of the TUC who reportedly dropped the hint said workers will march from the Independent Square to participate in the May Day parade.
The decision has been criticised by some government officials including the Deputy Minister for Transport Hon. Titus Glover.
Head of Research at the TUC, Dr Kwabena Nyarko Otoo, denied the decision explaining that organised labour will rather voice out their concerns about pensions at the parade on the day.
According to him the Union only wants reforms in the pensions law to ensure that pensioners retire with comfort and not in misery.
“What we really want the government to be doing is to reform pensions in this country and make sure that a lot more people are covered. And those who are covered can go home with a pension that gives them decent livelihood after a long period of service to the nation and also to the private sector.
He added that persons that retire with very low income should be given an assured of improved living conditions when they retire.
Mr Nyako added that the TUC would demand strict enforcement of the pension law, calling for a change in the way, pensions are managed.
“We want to see a change in the way pensions is managed at the level of SSNIT. We also want to see the extension for the person’s coverage so that a lot more people are covered,” he said.
He called on SSNIT to administer better enforcement of the pension’s law to enable those working with the formal economy with employees to pay the pension of social security on behalf of employees.
