The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the ongoing unrest in Sierra Leone and has strongly condemned it.

ECOWAS reaffirmed its calls for “zero-tolerance for unconstitutional change of government” in a statement released on Sunday.

It reaffirmed its commitment to helping Sierra Leone’s government and people advance democracy and sound governance.

“The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has learnt with utter disgust a plot by certain individuals to acquire arms and disturb the peace and constitutional order in Sierra Leone. ECOWAS condemns this act and calls for the arrest and prosecution of all participants in this illegal act.” ECOWAS said in its statement.

A nationwide curfew was subsequently imposed by the Sierra Leonean government on November 26 in response to a security breach that occurred at one of its barracks.

The government claims that early on Sunday morning, a few unidentified people made an attempt to break into the military arsenal at Wilberforce Barracks.
