In order to finalize the decision to reestablish road tolls, the Ministry of Roads and Highways has revealed that it has started interacting with important stakeholders.
Road tolls need to be reinstated, according to Francis Asenso-Boakye, the sector minister, in order to assist the government in fixing some of the nation’s dilapidated roadways.
With effect on November 18, 2021, the Ministry of Roads and Highways ordered a statewide stop to toll collection in 2021.
Responses to the toll removal, which was done in advance of the e-levy and to relieve traffic congestion at toll booths, were not entirely unanimous.
Speaking on the subject, Mr. Asenso-Boakye said that in order to reinstate road tolls, his government is looking for support from important parties.
“[Road] maintenance also means money. In many countries, they use the tolls that they collect from road tolls to finance maintenance. But in our case, we have suspended it, and I think it is a good time for us to start the discussion to bring these road tolls back and get money to maintain our roads.
“That is very important, and we have started the process by engaging the various stakeholders to get their buy-in to make sure that we bring the road tolls back.”
