The government’s plan to rename Ho Technical University in honor of Dr. Ephriam Amu has been sharply opposed by the Chiefs of the Asogli State.
The Traditional Council has criticized the decision, which was first made public in February 2018, for not consulting important stakeholders.
The council voiced its profound disappointment with the government and the university’s governing council during a press conference on Monday, April 22, 2024, for moving forward with the renaming without consulting key parties, such as the Asogli State Council, who are the land’s custodians.
The decision was deemed regrettable, misguided, and disrespectful by the Asogli State Council because it disregarded the opinions of those who would be immediately impacted.
The Asogli State Council, represented by Togbe Adzi Lakle Howusu XII, reaffirmed their vehement opposition to the renaming, pointing out that it is not only unjustified but also disrespectful of the university’s history and identity.
“Our attention has once again been drawn to attempts by authorities of the Ho Technical University and the government to rename the institute to Dr. Ephraim Amu Technical Institute. The Asogli State Council wishes to reaffirm our strong opposition to the government’s decision to rename the university without consulting the chiefs and people of Ho.
“The Asogli State Council views the decision to rename the institution without due consultation as an unfortunate, misplaced and disrespectful decision.”
