The nation’s religious leaders intend to petition Parliament to revoke Ghana’s lithium contract with Barari DV Company Limited.

Reports that Ghana is being shortchanged have increased the pressure on the government to reevaluate the lithium deal.

Ghana’s resources could be exploited, and the nation would not benefit enough from them, which has sparked debate and calls for justice and transparency.

The National Chief Imam’s spokesperson, Sheik Aremiyaw, and the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, Reverend Paul Boafo, held a roundtable discussion on Tuesday at the Institute of Economic Affairs in Accra. They stated that the current agreement needs to be renegotiated because it is not the best for the nation.

“The mineral resources of our country belong to the unborn children, not to us alone,” Sheik Aremiyaw declared. The people in charge of our nation’s mineral resources do not possess them once they are safeguarded and entrusted.

“They are accountable to society, so for them to engage in any contract there must be a certain engagement where the people are satisfied. We cannot as a nation sit down and let this also go down the drain and let people take it away for us to suffer.”

Likewise, Reverend Boafo emphasized that a revised agreement is necessary, with Ghana’s interests being given priority. “In my opinion, the best course of action is to take this agreement, critically evaluate it, and determine what we [Ghanaians] want.”
