President Akufo-Addo says Ghana is on course to becoming energy sufficient. The President in a speech read on his behalf by his Chief of Staff, Madam Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, indicated that work had begun on the construction of Ghana’s biggest bulk supply point for electricity distribution in Pokuase.

The $33,000,000 project funded by the US Government under the Ghana Power Compact is expected to improve power supply to parts of Accra and reduce distribution losses.

The President said that the project is in line with Government’s vision of stabilizing power supply to both domestic and industrial consumers.

He said that the government had begun work on the fundamentals of the economy because they believe that an improved macro economy is a fundamental requirement for simulating the investments.

According to him, the goal is to ensure “reliable supply of power to industries, so as to diversify our economy and help realise our vision of moving Ghana to a situation beyond aid,”

He added that the government seeks to continue what previous governments had endeavoured to achieve in order to improve the living condition of Ghanaian citizens.

“As many of you know, Government has been working over the last 28 years to put in place measures that will improve the living condition of the Ghanaian people, for a significant expansion and growth of the national economy and the generation of wealth and jobs,” he said.

“Again we all know that the world’s leading economists were developed through industrialization and value added activities.

Speaking on the same issue, the Vice President of the MCC Compact Operations, Mr. Anthony Welcher, said the US government is committed towards the provision of reliable energy in Africa.

“MCC remains deeply committed to working with the Ghanaian government, the private sector and civil society to unlock these countries extraordinary economy by strengthening the power sector and increasing access to reliable and affordable electricity. We, as a team, will drive economic growth and support a more stable, secured world for boosting business and industrial opportunities, “he said.

Minister for Energy Hon. John Peter Amewu urged the contractor to complete the project on time with the agreed specifications.

“I want to use this opportunity to call on the contractor that we are all aware that he is a very experienced contractor and that he should build and deliver this project in accordance with the specification” he said.

Mr Amewu further called on the contractor to ensure that the project is delivered on time.
