Mr Sulemanu Koney, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, has called on government to pass a Mineral Revenue Management Act as this would enhance activities within the sector.

More so, he said, passing the Act besides promoting good governance would result in more revenue being realised for government.

Speaking at the Zone II Inter-Mines First Aid and Safety Competition, Mr Koney said, “many of us are unaware of specific projects funded with mineral revenue or how these funds are expended. It is in this light that we urge government to pass a Mineral Revenue Management Act for the mining sector”.

The event was held over the weekend at the Perseus Mines resettlement community in Ayanfuri in the Central Region and held under the theme: “Life is priceless, so drive safely”.

The annual competition was created by the Ghana Chamber of Mines and the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission with support from the St. John Ambulance to aid in awareness creation amongst staff and communities in the mining sector.

Mr Koney said the competition has been used as a platform to showcase the central role that health and safety plays in the mining industry as well as in our domestic lives.

He commended the traditional leaders and other stakeholders for the existing cordial relationship and urged the “Community Safety Brigades to carry on demonstrating progressive knowledge and competence in first aid during accidents and emergencies to protect and save lives”.

Mr Stephen Kofi Ndede, the General Manager of Perseus Mining Ghana Ltd, said the company has implemented various health and safety interventions including safety talks and comprehensive risk management plans amongst others in communities where it operates.”

He said though the mining environment has become more safer, the connecting roads leaves much to be desired.

Mr Ndede said there is the need for attitude change especially by all road users and the promotion of good driving behaviors on the roads.

The contest endorsed by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources involved Goldfields Damang Mines, Adamus Resources, Chirano Mines and the host, Perseus Mining Ghana Limited.

The first part, which was an oral contest on First Aid and Safety, saw participants quizzed on their knowledge of first aid tips. Adamus Resources Ld emerged winners of he zone while Aboss Goldfields Damang, won first place in the Community Safety Brigades.

Each participant was awarded with a 55” curved TV.

Adamus Resources and Goldfields Damang will represent Zone 2 in the National finals of the Inter-Mines First Aid and Safety Competition slated for later this year, which will be hosted by Newmont Gold Ghana Limited, Ahafo Mine.
