Following an incredible comeback from a 2-1 home loss to a 2-0 victory over Morocco on Tuesday night, the Copper Queens of Zambia have advanced to their second consecutive Olympics Women’s Football Tournament.
Zambia overcame a nervous start thanks to a brace from Copper Queens captain Barbra Banda, who dazzled at the previous global showpiece.
In the 40th minute, just before halftime, Banda gave the Zambians the lead, giving the visitors hope against a fiercely competitive Morocco team.
Zambia needed only to score to guarantee their spot in the playoffs without giving up, so they pushed forward more players and trapped the Moroccans in their own half. Eventually, Najat Badri’s handball caused a mistake, which allowed the referee to point to the penalty spot.
Once more, the captain stepped up to score the second goal, which qualified Zambia for their second consecutive Olympics.
The Copper Queens, who are making their second consecutive appearance, will be hoping to perform better than in the Tokyo 2020 competition, where they were eliminated in the opening round.
