Onua TV’s Captain Smart granted 100,000 cedis bail

The Police have announced that Onua TV presenter, Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, has been granted bail of 100,00.00 Ghana cedis with one surety to be justified.

Captain Smart was arraigned today, Thursday by the Police at the Circuit Court 7.

According to the Police, he pleaded not guilty to the charge of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace under Section 207 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 ( ACT 29 .

The case has been adjourned to January 11th 2022. Meanwhile, Captain Smart is to report to the Police every Tuesday and Friday.

                                          BACKGROUND:

Nima Divisional Police Command apprehended Onua TV/FM morning show host Captain Smart last week following an unsavoury pronouncements that are likely to breach Ghana’s peace and security.

The Onua TV/FM morning show host was cautioned with the offence of offensive conduct under section 207 of the Criminal Act,1960 (Act 29).

Subsequently, National Media Commission issued a communique to slam managers of Onua TV/FM following the unprofessional and inciteful pronouncements that hinge on peace and security.

The Media General Group, owners of Onua TV/FM followed up with a rebuttal saying Captain Smart’s comments do not threaten Ghana’s ‘peace and security’.

According to the group, police misinterpreted the comments by Captain Smart.

However, Media General believes that the statement made by Captain Smart should not be one that should be interpreted in the manner that the Police did, and also to add that we are increasingly concerned about the new trend of the arrest of Journalists and media practitioners

The statement added that Captain Smart’s arrest is not just an isolated incident, but an example of the intolerance increasingly creeping Into Ghanaian society.
