Chirano Gold Mines Limited (CGML) in a communique sighted by Cedidollar.com has confirmed an employee fatality following a ground fall incident in the underground Akwaaba section of its mine.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of Friday, June 4, 2021 which triggered a search and rescue effort by the mining company. The management of Chirano Gold Mines Limited (CGML) added that relevant authorities have been notified and are providing support during this time.

No other injuries were reported as a result of the unfortunate incident in the underground Akwaaba section.

The statement added that mining activity has been suspended at the Akwaaba Mine until further notice while an investigation into the incident is conducted.

This sad events follows after a miner who went missing after a ground collapse at AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi mine on May 18, 2021, has been found dead.

AngloGold in a statement issued on Monday, May 30, 2021 said his body was discovered on Saturday, May 29, by mine rescue teams.

Another nine miners trapped in a pit at the Gbane mining area of the Talensi District of the Upper East Region were found dead.

The bodies were retrieved two days after a rescue mission by a joint security team together with officials of the National Disaster Management Organization, (NADMO).

Police say the deceased were miners trapped in a pit at the Moabok mining site following a downpour on the night of Monday, May 31, 2021.

In November 2020, an illegal small-scale mining pit in the outskirts of Ayanfuri in the Central Region collapsed and trapped eight persons between the ages of 24 and 35 years.

The illegal miners were rescued by residents and rushed to the Dunkwa on Offin Government Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

A similar situation was recorded in October 2020, where five persons died when they were trapped in a mining pit at Ayamfuri in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central region.

15 others who were also trapped in the cave sustained varied injuries after the incident.
