Samuel Ofosu Ampofo

The chair of the opposition National Democratic Congress is expected to appear before the police Criminal Investigative Department Thursday over a controversial leaked tape in which he is accused, among other things, of threatening to kidnap and cause mayhem in the country.

Samuel Ofosu Ampofo is likely to appear in the company of members of the Functional Executive Committee of the party, Communications Director Samuel Gyemfi has hinted.

In an interview with Joy News My Gyemfi described the police invitation extended to Mr Ampofo as “comical.”

He would rather the tape and its content which he claimed to have been doctored would be disregarded.

He also hinted Mr Ampofo will appear before the police CID in the company of the supporters of the party most of whom believe their chairman is being hounded.

Background

A controversial recording of a meeting has been leaked to the media with a voice suspected to be that of the NDC party chairman threatening to kidnap people and cause mayhem in the country.

The voice also chronicled events at the just ended violent Ayawaso West Wuogon AWW by-election which has been a subject of a truth and a fact finding commission.

Contrary to claims by the members of the opposition NDC that there was no sponsored NDC vigilante group at the AWW constituency during the by-election, the voice believed to be that of Ofosu Ampofo was clear and unambiguous.

“[Some people] were vehemently opposed to it [withdrawal] but when cool heads started reflecting on the whole process there are people who called me and said: “initially we were angry with you.” I mean we have chief Azorka in our meeting saying chief thank you if you had not taken this decision I don’t know how my men would have gone back to Tamale. The issue is that they had brought the Kandahar Boys and the Kandahar Boys know our (Azorkor) boys from Tamale so it was a targeted attack. So once they spot us, they invite them,” the voice said.

The voice suspected to be that of Ofosu Ampofo added: “We will go after them. But we will not go after them face to face. We have to use tactical approaches to make life very uncomfortable for some of them. We will target some people and we will let the people know that their life is in danger and once they know their life is in danger they themselves will be careful. As for that one I want to assure you that we will go all out to ensure that as President John Mahama said when it comes to this game, in fact, we are better than them.”

The NDC has officially denied the content of the tape. The party’s Communication’s Director claimed their offices have been bugged by operatives of the National Security but insisted the voice on the tape was not that of the Samuel Ofosu Ampofo.

The police however say the content of the tape has dire security implications to the country and have invited the party chairman.

He is expected to appear before them on Thursday to assist with investigations.

“The Criminal Investigative Department has intercepted an audio messaging circulating in both traditional and social media on Wednesday 27 February, 2019 in which you are alleged to have made some comments that have security implications,” the police CID said and extended an invitation to him.
