The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has promised that national service will not be mandatory when he is voted as president.
The Vice President stated, “I think it’s time to rethink the concept of our current National Service Scheme in order to help our youth get jobs.”
He made it clear, saying, “My government will propose that those who can secure jobs after completing their education would be exempt from National Service.”
” National Service will no longer be mandatory and students will have the option to decide whether to do National Service. This will also encourage companies to go to campuses for recruitment annually.”
After completing their post-secondary education, all Ghanaian residents are required to participate in the National Service Scheme (NSS). The National Service Act of 1980 (Act 426) established the programme, which places graduates to work in a variety of economic sectors of the nation in an effort to promote national development and unity.
After graduating from college or another postsecondary school, qualifying persons must register with the National Security Service (NSS) and complete a one-year National Service programme. Participants are assigned to work in government offices, schools, hospitals, private sector companies, and other authorised establishments throughout Ghana during this time.
In order to help participants improve their knowledge and abilities, the curriculum also consists of seminars and workshops in addition to orientation programmes that instruct participants on their tasks and responsibilities.
Participants in the National Service programme receive certificates upon successful completion; these certificates are frequently needed to obtain work in Ghana’s public and commercial sectors. Participants may also be eligible for additional benefits, such as loan and scholarship eligibility and preferential consideration for government employment.
All things considered, the National Service Scheme significantly influences Ghanaian graduates’ professional and personal growth while advancing attempts at national development.
