Ghana’s business community has been reassured by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), about his intentions to enact business-friendly tax reforms to expand transactions during his administration.
Speaking with representatives of the Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA) in Accra on Friday, Dr. Bawumia reaffirmed his intention to enact a flat tax system following the 2025 tax amnesty for all individuals and businesses.
In order to stop cargo and goods being diverted to nearby ports, he promised to compare Ghana’s port duties to those of Lome Port, Togo, and ensure that they are equal to or even lower than those of that port.
In order to maintain predictability in the price of imported goods, the NPP flagbearer gave the business community assurances about his intentions to impose specific duties at the port on 20- and 40-footer containers.
He thought that the Bank of Ghana’s policy of buying gold would stabilize the Cedi, the local currency, and guarantee steady exchange rates, all of which would improve price predictability in the long run.
“My government will be business-centered and make Ghana one of the most business-friendly economies in the world,” Dr Bawumia added.
He announced government’s plans to roll out Credit Scoring System for entrepreneurs and individuals by June, this year, to ensure lower interest rates on loans, especially for those who were honest with their loan payments.
“Under my administration, we will reduce government borrowing by moving government’s expenditures to the private sector.”
Dr. Bawumia declared that during the first four years of his presidency, he would produce 2,000 megawatts of solar energy in order to guarantee an inexpensive and dependable power supply.
“I am encouraged by GUTA’s positive reaction to my policy proposals, especially the tax amnesty and flat tax and container rates proposals, aimed at creating a friendly environment for businesses to thrive.”
