MTN Nigeria has shut all its stores and service centres in the country until further notice after its facilities in three cities were attacked.

The attacks on the MTN facilities were in response to days of riots in South Africa chiefly targeting foreign-owned, including Nigerian, businesses.

The Nigerian division of South African telecom operator MTN said in a statement via Reuters on Wednesday that it will close all its offices,

“The safety and security of our customers, staff and partners is our primary concern,” MTN Nigeria said in a statement.

Many Africans in South Africa, particularly Nigerians have been victims of xenophobic attacks by South African youth.

The youth, among other issues, are accusing the African descents of taking over their jobs.

The violence have been expressed in many ways, some dehumazing. At least one person has been reported dead with scores of others injured.

There have been widespread condemnation of the attacks.
