James Kwasi Appiah

Former Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah has been paid the three-month salary arrears owed him by the Ministry of Youth and Sports during his second spell as the senior national team’s Head coach.

A total amount of GH¢593,000 was transferred to the 60-year-old.

The payment of the salary arrears was initially held back after Appiah reportedly rejected payment in cedis and insisted on being paid in dollars per his employment contract with the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

However, after further negotiations, the former coach softened his stance on the terms of payment and accepted to be paid the cedi equivalent of his outstanding salary of $105,000.

Kwesi Appiah, served as an assistant coach in the Black Stars from 2007-2012. He was promoted to the head coach role in 2012 and helped the national team qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Eventually, the Black Stars were knocked out of the group stages in Brazil and left his position in September 2014.
Appiah spent three years in Sudan with Al Khartoum before making a return to the Black Stars to serve as head coach for the second time.

He was relieved of his duties in January 2020 and was subsequently replaced by Charles Kwablan Akonnor. He has been unattached ever since.
