Ghana’s Hasaacas Ladies lost 2-0 to Mamelodi Sundowns in the maiden TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League on Friday night.
Morifi started the scoring with an assist from Mgcoyi in the 33rd minute. Mgcoyi herself added another goal at the 65th minute, with 10 women later on.
Regina Mogolola received a red card in the 92nd minute with VAR review, just 2 minutes after being subbed into the game.
The Sekondi based Women’s team came into the first ever TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League competition having won an unprecedented double; Women’s Premier League and FA Cup in 2021 before traveling to Ivory Coast to win the first ever West Africa Football Union Zone B Women’s Club Championship.
When the Ghanaians won the WAFU-B zonal qualifiers to reach the WCL finals, many thought that was a fluke. But in Cairo, Hasaacas Ladies proved they are one of the best teams in the continent.
However the South Africans were too strong for the Ghanaians as they were humbled by two goals to nil in the final game.
Hasaacas Ladies Coach, Yussif Basigi conceded defeat and vowed to come back next year stronger.
“It’s unfortunate that we did not win. We came in with the intention of wining, but it was almost impossible. We will be ready to win the next edition of WCL”.
“My centre backs had to cover more for the half backs. I never taught my players to set offside traps, so the second goal did not happen because of that”.
“The next edition will surely be tougher, we came here and saw it all. Everyone will go back and get stronger for the next time”.
“It’s historic for us to be in the final, because others came and go, but we stayed”. Basigi said.
