NDC Member of Parliament (MP) for the Odododiodoo Constituency and a former Minister of State, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has predicted a massive defeat for any member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who contests the flagbearer position of the party against John Mahama ahead of the 2024 general election.
According to Mr. Vanderpuye, any aspirant who goes against the party’s 2020 presidential candidate will not be able to garner more than one percent of the votes from delegates.
There have been rumours about some senior members of the NDC lacing their boots to contest the former president.
But speaking on Face to Face on Citi TV, Mr. Nii Lantey Vanderpuye said he’s confident John Mahama will be endorsed by the party as their flagbearer.
“John Mahama is our next candidate. We are going to endorse unanimously him as our candidate in the next congress. Anyone who will be courageous enough to come forward will not have more than 1%.”
“This does not mean we do not have other viable candidates. We do, but John Mahama is the candidate people identify more with. They have come to identify with him more.”
Although there’s no certainty yet about the former President’s political future with the party; there appears to be visible signs indicating a possible comeback.
In recent times, he has been embarking on a ‘Thank You’ tour across the country to thank Ghanaians who voted for him and the NDC in the 2020 election, although the party lost the polls.
In one of his trips, John Dramani Mahama said his party will be more vigilant at the polls during the 2024 general elections, using the phrase ‘do or die’, which has sparked a storm of condemnation and commendation alike.
Speaking on Akina FM, a local radio station in Techiman, during his ‘Thank You’ tour of the Bono East Region, the former President said the NDC won the 2020 parliamentary and presidential elections but was robbed of victory.
