The National President of Ghana Union Trade Association, Mr Joseph Kwaku Obeng has called on the Government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to emulate the actions of the Nigerian Government and protect their local goods.

Speaking in an interview, he said the actions taken by the Nigerian Government to shut their borders was devastating to other countries but in the best interest of Nigerians. Though he commended such action, he said the best thing the Nigerian Government could have done was to communicate their decision to other neighboring countries since they are a Comity of Nations.

He said since there is a treaty, decisions taken shouldn’t be done in isolation, adding that issues like this should be conferred with member states for other countries to know the period the boarders will be closed.

Mr Joseph Obeng again said the actions taken by Nigerians show that they do not have respect for member states.

The President urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to wake up, adding that they must take quick actions by talking to the Nigerian Government to release all Ghanaian goods.

He also called on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to stop the Nigerians from breaking the ECOWAS protocol.

Mr Joseph Obeng said the African Continental Free Trade will be one of the best thing that will happen to Ghana, but advised that if challenges like these are not solved from the grassroots, it will have greater effect on the AFCFT.

He urges the Government to learn from Nigerians and note that ECOWAS is not sacrosanct.
