While applauding the government’s move to offer kidney patients free dialysis treatments through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the Ghana Kidney Association (GKA) has urged the government to extend the support indefinitely.
With effect from June 1 until December 2024, patients under the age of 18 and those over 60 would receive all eight monthly dialysis sessions at no cost, according to a recent announcement from the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
Every month, patients aged 19 to 59 are eligible for two complimentary dialysis sessions.
The Ghana Kidney Association thanked the government in a statement on Tuesday and urged it to become a permanent part of the NHIS, extending the support to all patient groups.
The Association further stated that organ transplantation is the most economical kidney replacement therapy and encouraged the government to enact the draft legislative framework for organ transplantation.
Citing prior NHIA payment delays, the group has voiced concerns regarding timely repayment for the services.
