As the Russia and Ukraine war disrupts the supply of fertilizer to Ghana and other parts of the world, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture has called on importers of organic fertilizer to consider procuring their raw materials from Ghana.

According to the ministry, the current demand for organic fertilizer stands at 30,000 metric tons which is way lower than the demand for inorganic fertilizer, which stands at 600,000 metric tons.

Speaking after touring the Accra Compost Recycling Plant, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto expressed government’s commitment to supporting all efforts at producing more organic fertilizer in the country.

“We are appealing to some stakeholders we met who are importing organic fertilizers. We have told them the policy is to encourage their partners abroad to come and set up here to use local organic material as input. Because, we have a lot of it. We have in the savannah belt, forest belt, middle and southern parts of the country, a whole lot of materials that can be used as input.”

“And government is committed to ensuring the right structures are set up to support the use of organic fertilizer. We have to look within ourselves to replace the shortage we are experiencing, and the answer is organic fertilizer,” he added.
