H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has promised that if elected president, he will reduce government size and spending by at least GH¢30 billion.

Similar promises to keep the number of Ghanaian ministers and deputy ministers to a maximum of 50 were made by Dr. Bawumia during a speech to the nation on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, in Accra.

“I have made it clear and even stated that I want to bring down government expenditure and the size of government by at least 3 percent of GDP, which is about GH¢30 billion over the next four years. I have also made it clear that I will have no more than 50 ministers, which is also to say I want to bring the size of government down,” Dr. Bawumia said in response to a question about what he would do differently to reduce the skyrocketing cost of running government during an interaction with the clergy in the Northern Region.

In addition, Dr. Bawumia promised to safeguard public funds and allocate them effectively to carry out projects that have a positive social impact.
