Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu

The Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has reiterated that he has been making genuine efforts to reach consensus with the Minority Caucus on all issues.

He said, as the Majority Leader, building consensus is at the heart of what he does.

“Former Head of State, General Acheampong used to say, “We must all recognize that we are one people in one country and we have a common destiny.

“We should also recognize that wisdom does not reside in the head of one person or perhaps in one group of persons. And that’s why I do what I do.”

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said he counts on the strengths of individuals in Parliament.

“And that is why under my leadership, in Parliament when it comes to making laws, you know the people that I brought together? The Honorable Fuseini Inussah who is no longer in Parliament, the Honorable Yieleh Chireh.

“Again with the opposition at the time, Honorable Shaibu, Daboya- Mankarigu. On the part of the Majority, we had Anyimadu-Antwi, Member for Konongo, the current Chairman of Legal Constitution Affairs. Then we had Banda, Offinso. We brought all these people together just for them to know that we are one people.”

He further stated that when it comes to making law, he assembles members from both sides in order to correct any disparities.

“We’d go through the bill, the clauses, the sentences and correct what we think should be corrected. That’s what we did. We did everything together. And we’re continuing this time around. And everybody who comes to that meeting will know how genuine we are around that table. That is how it should be.”

Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu revealed that when he chairs business committee meetings, even when there are disagreements, they do well to work together.

“However, to the extent that we have challenges, it means that there are other avenues that we should explore. I started doing this even when I was a Minority Leader, the Majority would bring their bill through their leaders, and they’d come and dump it on my table. We’ve been told that you have some expertise in this, do it for us. And they would leave it.”
