The government’s attempts to rename the Ho Technical University after Ghanaian composer Ephraim Amu have been denounced as unlawful by the Minority in Parliament.

Due to the lack of consultation, the decision that was first made public in February 2018 has come under fire from various parties, most notably the Asogli State Council.

The MP for Akatsi North and ranking member of the parliament’s education committee, Peter Nortsu Kotoe, criticized the government in an interview with Citi News for not introducing a bill to implement the name change.

“It is illegal because if you read the law establishing a university, the name of the university is stated in section one of the law. So no person can just stand up and say I have changed.

“If they bring any name, if they are asking for any name change to any university, it is illegal because Parliament has not approved it. It may be somebody’s suggestion but as if far as I know, there is no bill before Parliament to that effect.”

On Monday, the Asogli State Chiefs angrily rejected the government’s plan to rename Ho Technical University in honor of Dr. Ephriam Amu.

In a press conference, the council conveyed their profound dissatisfaction with the government and the university’s governing body for moving forward with the renaming without consulting key parties, such as the Asogli State Council, who are the land’s custodians.

The decision was deemed regrettable, misguided, and disrespectful by the Asogli State Council because it disregarded the opinions of those who would be immediately impacted.
