Following a thrilling 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Techiman Heroes in the Division One play-off in Accra on Tuesday at the Accra Sports Stadium, Young Apostles have been promoted to the Ghana Premier League.
At the Accra Sports Stadium, Suleman Yahaya Abu scored the game-winning penalty, guaranteeing Young Apostles a spot in Ghana’s top division for the upcoming campaign.
After regular, the score was tied at one, and after 30 minutes of extra time, no more goals were scored, setting up the thrilling penalty shootout.
Young Apostles missed two of Techiman Heroes’ spot-kicks, thus at first it looked like they were headed for historic qualifying.
But for Techiman Heroes, Emmanuel Owusu and Ebenezer Agyapong missed their penalties, tying the score.
Suleman Yahaya Abu had the opportunity to score the game-winning penalty, launching Young Apostles into the Ghana Premier League, following Mathew Amponsah’s miss for Techiman Heroes.
Techiman Heroes, who had the superior opportunities in the 120 minutes before to the shootout, had a difficult time losing.
In Zone 1 of Ghana’s second division, both teams finished first in their respective groups during the regular season, setting up this playoff to determine who would be promoted to the Premier League.
With this win, Young Apostles joined Nsoatreman FC, Aduana Stars, Berekum Chelsea, and Bechem United as the sixth team from the Bono Ahafo region to play in the top division.
Young Apostles have achieved a major turning point with this promotion, as they will now take on the top teams in Ghana’s premier league.
Vision FC from Zone 3 will compete in the Ghana Premier League in 2024–25; the Zone 2 champion is still to be announced.
