Despite being awarded 3 maximum points and 3 goals, Great Olympics lost their spot in the Ghana Premier League and will now play in the Division One League next season.
Accra Great Olympics had a small moment of comfort on Sunday when Real Tamale United (RTU), who had already been demoted, failed to show up for their match against the Accra-based team.
The joy was fleeting, though, when more outcomes did not pan out as planned. Heart of Lions managed to escape with a vital 2-2 draw, and Karela United surprised Medeama by winning by a slim margin to move up to 12th position in the standings.
Due to this forfeit, Great Olympics received all available points, momentarily moving them above the relegation zone.
Even with 44 points, Great Olympics was finally dropped along with RTU and Boafoakwa Tano. Hearts of Oak defeated Bechem United in a close match to avoid relegation.
Great Olympics had already won promotion to the Ghana Premier League in 2016 and had survived for eight years as a top flight team. The league’s expansion from 16 to 18 clubs four years ago improved their fortunes and allowed them to stay in spite of being demoted at first.
