The president has announced a decision by the government to purchase three new helicopters to facilitate police operations in the country.
Nana Akufo-Addo made the announcement at the end-of-year West African Security Services Association (WASSA) of the Ghana Police Service Friday, at the Police Headquarters in Accra.
According to him, the purchase of the three helicopters will in no small way assist the police to maintain law and order in the country.
When purchased, members of the police service will be trained as pilots for the helicopters.
The announcement comes at a time when there are rising cases of armed robbery as well as cases of indiscipline amongst the service.
The police in most cases have complained of logistical challenges which have hampered their operations. It is hoped the helicopters will boost morale in the service and help in fighting crime across the country.
Recruitment
For a service that is thoroughly under staffed, the president said a total of 4,000 people are being recruited into the police service, explaining that about 2,000 recruits are currently undergoing training.
This will help in improving the police civilian ratio.
On the provision of vehicles, the president said government has so far provided the police service with 320 vehicles. A total of 273, is on its way, he added.
Conditions of Service
The president also promised better conditions of service for the personnel saying, that promotions of officers will not be based on political affiliations and other considerations.
He said the promotions will be based on merit.
