Hon. (Dr) Yaw Adutwum, Minister for Education

According to Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the government has announced the release of GH¢20 million for the payment of capitation grants for public basic schools nationwide.

In an effort to increase and improve access to education and support initiatives aimed at improving school performance, the program was created to replace all parent-paid fees in public basic schools.

The Minority in Parliament and stakeholders in the education sector complained about the delays, arguing that they were having a detrimental effect on basic education. The grants had not been paid for two years.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, responded to inquiries on the floor of parliament by saying that attempts have been made to pay off the arrears.

“Mr. Speaker, capitation grant arrears of GH¢15 million were disbursed to schools in May 2023 and the remaining arrears of last year amounting to GH¢20 million have been released by the Ministry of Finance and are currently being processed for disbursement. In addition, GH¢4.2 million of this year’s capitation is also being processed for disbursement.”
