The Black stars of Ghana stunned their West Africa neighbours, Nigeria to proceed to the World Cup following a 1-1 draw at the Moshood Abiola Stadium on Tuesday.
Ghana qualified for their fourth World Cup after edging out Nigeria on the away goal rule which broke the hearts of millions of Nigerians in Abuja.
The Senior National team drew goalless in a highly publicized derby, in the first-leg of the 2022 World Cup playoffs in Kumasi, leaving all to play for in Abuja on Tuesday and they did exactly that, qualifying for the World Cup after missing the 2018 showpiece in Russia. For Nigeria, this is the first time they will be missing the World Cup since 2006.
Captain Thomas Partey gave Ghana the lead against the run of play in the 10th minute, before Watford defender William Trost-Ekong levelled from the penalty spot 12 minutes later after Ademola Lookman was judged to have been fouled in the box.
Partey’s strike put Ghana through to the quadrennial competition on the away goals rule after the first leg finished goalless at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Friday.
