Fifi Kwetey: Akufo- Addo’s promise to not meddle in the 2024 election is hollow

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) general secretary, Fifi Kwetey, has questioned President Akufo-Addo’s assurance that he won’t meddle in the 2024 general elections.

Fifi Kwetey called President Akufo-Addo’s claims “hollow” and “lacking substance” in an interview with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV’s The Point of View.

In an encounter with Ghana’s Apostolic Nuncio, President Akufo-Addo reiterated his resolve to protect Ghana’s democratic values and guarantee a free and fair election process.

He promised that no candidate would be forced onto the country against their collective will and that the desire of the Ghanaian people would be respected. The President emphasized that the people’s right to choose their leader is a sovereign one, and he is committed to upholding this democratic right while in office.

However, Fifi Kwetey charged that the President was betraying his words with his deeds, undermining confidence. She cited the incident in which the President threatened to give up his position to stop illegal mining (galamsey), but he chose not to do so in spite of the continued dangers to life and water resources.

“Between you and I, the words of Nana Akufo-Addo are very hollow, shallow, and lack substance. He’s proven in 8 years, what he says and what he does are virtually polls apart. I will not take the words of Nana Akufo-Addo to the bank. I will never trust any words that come from him.

“The man says he’s putting his presidency on the line over ‘galamsey’, what have we seen? The very opposite of it. So, his word is worth nothing, and NDC, we simply don’t put a premium on it,” he pointed out.

Furthermore, in spite of widespread concerns about potential bias and the need for impartiality in the electoral process, Fifi Kwetey brought attention to the President’s unwillingness to bow to public pressure when he appointed a communicator of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a Commissioner of the Electoral Commission (EC).

“In the history of our country, have you heard of a President who puts amongst the commissioners of the Electoral Commission a card-bearing communicator of the NPP? Nana Akufo-Addo did that, the country spoke, NDC wrote to the Council of State and said this is simply not right. So many other people spoke, did he change? No, he never changed. He simply doesn’t care, he’s stone-deaf. So, for me and the NDC, we do not trust any word of Nana Akufo-Addo, we do not trust him.”
