In light of the approaching general elections on December 7, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has emphasized the necessity of prohibiting military personnel from attending polling places.
In order to guarantee free, fair, and credible elections, the Speaker discloses that Parliament will consult with the President, representatives of the major political parties, security agencies, and other relevant parties.
On Tuesday, June 11, in his inaugural speech to the legislature, Bagbin stated that unless they are called upon to handle an emergency, the military should avoid polling places and voting centers.
“We don’t want to see [the] military during the election. When there is a need to call them, they will be called, but they should not be at polling or voting centres.
“Honourable members, the clergy and notable civil society leaders will be actively involved. The signs and signals of happiness in the country are not those of assurance and hope.”
