Samuel Dubik Mahama, Managing Director, ECG

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has been requested by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to revoke the substantial GH¢5.8 million fine that was imposed against its former board members right away.

On Tuesday, April 16, PURC fined former ECG board members, who served from January 1 to March 18, 2024, a hefty GH¢5.8 million for not providing a load-shedding schedule following several power outages in January and March of this year, among other offenses.

Following the power distributor’s three consecutive failures to comply with PURC requests for data, the PURC also levied GH¢36,000 in sanctions.

The information sought included information on the Cash Waterfall Mechanism’s (CWM) tariff revenue allocation, the supply of regulatory audit data, the filing of operational matter-related data, and other regulatory audit data.

Samuel Dubik Mahama, the managing director of ECG, stated in a letter dated Friday, April 19, that the sanctions imposed on him and the other board members are void and need to be rescinded due to their violation of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission Act, 1997 (Act 538).

According to Mr. Dubik Mahama, it provided all the documentation that PURC asked for in its letter dated March 18 and ought to have been given an opportunity to address any potential misunderstandings.
