IPPs to receive ¢200 million as part payment for debt

By : Kofi Kafui Sampson on 12 Jul 2019, 10:37

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has received an official receipt of 200 million cedis  from Power Distribution Service (PDS).

This follows a threat by the Chamber of Independent Power Distributors and Bulk Consumers (CIPDIB) to shut down all plants in seven days if debts owed them to the tune of $300 million are not paid.

The threat if carried could lead to a loss of 600 megawatts of power which will plunge parts of the country into total darkness.

There was initial misunderstanding between PDS and ECG over whose responsibility it was to make payment to the Chamber.

However, an amount of amount of 200 million cedis has been released with few days left for the ultimatum to be carried through.

The Public Relations head at ECG, Dan Adjei Larbi has refuted the allegations that the 200 cedis was released because of the threat from CIPDIB.

But speaking on the matter with an Accra based radio station, the Chief Executive Officer of CIPDIB Elikplim Kwabla Apertorkpor says they are yet to receive any money from ECG.

Even if the 200million is paid, Mr Apertorkpor said the money is woefully inadequate.

“We’ve not been engaged by the Ministry of Energy but we had a conversation with ECG that Government has released 200 million cedis to pay part of the debt but actually 200 million is nothing compared to the demand of the IPP… We will be having a meeting to know our position and the way forward he said.
