The EC has backtracked on its decision to declare the results of the 2020 presidential election in Ghana.
The Commission had set Tuesday 5:00pm deadline to announce the results but with just a couple of hours to go, it issued a statement extending the time for declaration.
It is not yet clear when that declaration will now be made.
Early on, the Commission sent an invitation to a number of journalists asking them to be part of the “Declaration of the 2020 Presidential Election Results”
The invitation further read: “The Electoral Commission has the honour to invite you to the formal declaration of the 2020 presidential election results.”
It was in fulfillment of the promise by the EC to declare the results within 24 hours.
At a time when the two major parties are providing conflicting results about the outcome of the elections in their strong rooms the declaration by the EC should ordinarily end any such controversy.
But the NDC raised issues with the decision by the EC to declare the results at 5:00pm Tuesday.
In an interview with Joy News Rojo Mettle Nunoo, a leading member of the NDC insists the EC is not being transparent with them.
According to him, they have been sitting at the national EC strongroom for close to 24 hours after close of polls but have not received a single certified results.
This he said was alien to what has been the practice since the advent of the fourth Republican constitution.
When the Joy News reporter reminded Mr Nunoo about the changes made by the EC and which was communicated to the parties as well as the media way before election day, he was adamant.
Per the changes the results will now be collated at the regional level and not the national. Which means, the parties will now have to certify the presidential results at the 16 regional capitals and send the final results to the EC strong room at the national level for declaration.
The EC is however yet to react to the concerns being raised by the NDC.
