Hon. Alhassan Suhuyini, MP for Tamale North Constituency

The Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini has described as unfortunate the cancellation of a scheduled meeting of the Privileges Committee of Parliament to probe allegations of contempt levelled against Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyepong.

The Privileges Committee was programmed to meet on Thursday [August 5, 2021] for the first hearing with regard to the allegations brought to the attention of Parliament by Alhassan Suhuyini.

The contempt charges follow alleged threats on the life of Erastus Asare Donkor, a jouirnalist with Kumasi-based Luv FM.

Alhassan Suhuyini in a Citi News interview expressed his dissatisfaction about the turn of events.

According to him, the actions of the accused [Kennedy Agyapong] amount to an act of cowardice.

“It came to me as a surprise when the committee indicated to me that they have not been successful at inviting him [Kennedy Agyapong] yet due to the fact that he is out of the country. I find it unfortunate, and it amounts to an act of cowardice because we’ve all known about this case for some time now.”

The Tamale North lawmaker had earlier expressed his readiness to appear before the committee to testify and make his case.

Background
Kennedy Agyapong is alleged to have called for the reporter, Erastus Asare Donkor, to be beaten following the latter’s testimony before the committee probing the disturbances in Ejura in the Ashanti Region.

The mother company of Luv FM, Multimedia Group, has already petitioned the police over the issue.

The Ghana Journalists Association has also called out Mr. Agyapong recalling similar comments made by the MP before the killing of Ahmed Suale, an investigator on Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ Tiger-Eye PI team.

Last week, the Deputy Majority Leader and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, offered support to the Assin Central MP.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Mr. Afenyo-Markin, who served as legal counsel for the Assin Central MP in a similar invitation to the Privileges Committee, described his colleague’s conduct as a slip.

“The media is not our enemy. We are not enemies to ourselves. Sometimes we slip,” the Deputy Majority leader said.

But Mr. Agyapong has since called the bluff of Parliament, saying he does not care if the House expels him over the matter.

He castigated the Tamale North MP for making the report against him.
