The COVID-19 National Trust Fund has grossed an amount of GH¢8.75 million exactly a week after it was announced by the president.
This was disclosed by President Nana Akufo-Addo, Sunday, during his fifth official address to the nation on how government is leading war against covid 19.
The fund is to help government meet critical national needs largely of the vulnerable groups in the country.
The total sum in the form of donations from the general public also includes an amount of US$600,000, the president said.
The president donated is three months salary to the fund, a move which was emulated by his appointees with a good number donating either a portion or their entire salaries for the next three months.
The president commended Ghanaians and institutions for heeding to the clarion call to support the Fund.
“I am very grateful to the individuals and institutions, who have responded to my appeal for donations to be made into the COVID-19 National Trust Fund, which has been established to complement Government’s fight against the virus, and to assist in the welfare of the needy and the vulnerable. A total amount of some eight million, seven hundred and fifty thousand cedis (GH¢8.75 million), which includes six hundred thousand United States dollars (US$600,000), has been received so far for this purpose. I am happy that so many appointees of my government have also followed my example by donating their salaries to the Fund,” he said.
The fund is expected to be managed by a Board of Trustees headed by the former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo. Other members include Archbishop Justice Ofei Akrofi, Mr. Jude Kofi Bucknor, Gifty Afenyi-Dadzie, Mrs Elsie Addo-Awadzie, Dr. Ernest Ofori-Sarpong, Dr Tanko. Mr. Collins Asare will act as Secretary to the Board.
