Just when the dust on the Black Stars captaincy row appears to be settling Black Stars coach, Kwasi Appiah has firmed up his decision, naming André Ayew as the substantive captain of the team.
The announcement follows a meeting with the top brass of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Normalization Committee (NC).
Appiah’s decision has thus been approved by the management committee.
Background
Gyan announced his decision to retire after he was stripped of the captaincy by Coach Kwasi Appiah. He also asked to be excused from the upcoming AFCON 2019 in Egypt.
Two days after, he made a u-turn after a presidential intervention. He was then named in the provisional 29-man squad for the nation’s cup.
It was unclear what his role will be after his return to the side.
On Friday the coach issued a statement, announcing the new leadership structure at the Black Stars which confirmed Dede Ayew as the new captain.
He replaces Asamoah Gyan, as captain of the Black Stars.
Gyan, who has captained the Black Stars for a record seven years has been elevated to the position of “General Captain”.
Kwadwo Asamoah, who also makes a return to the side, has been named the deputy captain.
The President of the GFA-NC Dr Kofi Amoah has implored all stakeholders to support the transition whilst the Black Stars prepare for AFCON 2019.
