Although the CAF Commission has cleared Ahmad Ahmad to run for re-election, CAF’s ExCo says FIFA must have the final say as to whether Ahmad Ahmad can run for the elections.

Ahmad Ahmad was banned by FIFA for five years in November for breaching various codes of ethics. He appealed the ban and the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) reinstated him temporarily as CAF President in January.

He has however been given the go ahead to run for re-election by the CAF Commission.

A letter sent to the Secretary General of African Football Confederation reads,

“The decision rendered on the November 19, 2020 by the Judging Chamber of the Ethics Commission of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association prohibiting Mr. Ahmad AHMAD from exercising any activity related to football at the national and international for five years have been suspended by decision N° TAS 2020 / A / 7592 of January 29, 2021 of the CAS, the candidate Ahmad AHMAD is now declared eligible for the post of CAF Presidency”

The number of candidates in the race for the seat remains four; South African Patrice Motsepe, Senegal FA President Augustin Senghor, Mauritania Football Federation President Ahmed Yahya and Former Ivorian FA President Jacques Anouma.
