After defeating Stade Malien of Mali, the reigning champions, Dreams Football Club will proudly represent Ghana in the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup Semi-Finals on Sunday, April 7.
The Ghanaians, participating in their first CAF Inter-Club competition, came back from behind to salvage a 1-1 draw, which sent them through on a 3-2 aggregate to the next stage of the competition that will put them within striking distance of continental glory. This came after a 2-1 impressive win away from home in Mali last weekend.
The 2009 champions were given more ball time by the Ghanaians, who entered the match fresh off a 2-1 victory away from home, in an attempt to catch them off guard.
Just before the hour mark, Yoro Diaby fired from close range to level the score, taking advantage of some shoddy marking from the Ghanaians on a set piece. It was almost a failed tactic.
The equalizer was eventually found when Sylvester Simba pounced on a loose ball that the keeper mishandled to fire home from a tight angle to level the score and send the Ghanaians into the semi-finals on a 3-2 aggregate. The goal served as a wake-up call for the hosts, who pushed forward in search of the equalizer.
The Still Believe lads are not only in their first-ever CAF Interclub semifinals, but they also made history by being the first Ghanaian club to advance past the first round of a CAF Interclub competition in 20 years.
Dreams’ semi-final matchup with either Zamalek SC or Future FC is guaranteed due to their qualification.
