Black Stars arrive

The Senior National Team were given a heroes welcome after they touched down at the Kotoka International Airport at 2am on Wednesday morning following a memorable qualification into the FIFA World Cup in sensational and exciting fashion on Tuesday.

The Black stars pip their Nigerians counterparts for their fourth World Cup appearance on the away goal rule following a 1-1 draw in Abuja on Tuesday night in front of millions of Nigerians.

Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif led a delegation that met the team on arrival at the airport.

The two sides drew 0-0 in the first leg in Kumasi last week and heading into the return fixture, the Ghanaians only needed a scoring draw to progress.

And they did exactly that, qualifying for the World Cup after missing the 2018 showpiece in Russia. For Nigeria, this is the first time they will be missing the World Cup since 2006.

Captain Thomas Partey gave Ghana the lead against the run of play in the 10th minute, before Watford defender William Trost-Ekong levelled from the penalty spot 12 minutes later after Ademola Lookman was judged to have been fouled in the box.

Speaking to Citi Sports while drenched in champagne, Partey said, “everybody is happy and we have to celebrate. We believed in ourselves and trusted each other and now we have qualified. I am very grateful to this team.”
