The Ministry of Aviation has assured passengers of air transport that there will be no disruptions to flights from Monday, March 16, following a threat by the Union and Professional Associations of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), to embark on an industrial action.

In a statement responding to the workers threat, Aviation Minister, Joseph Kofi Adda, described the decision by the staff as unfortunate.

The Union and Professional Associations of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority have raised concerns about the encroachment on aviation lands in parts of Accra.

At least 660 acres of land at La Wireless and Nkwatanang are reported to have been illegally occupied by some individuals and institutions which hamper aviation safety.

At a press conference in February this year, the workers also demanded the removal of the Board Chairman of the GCAA, over allegations that he has been interfering in the day-to-day affairs of the Authority.

The move has led to at least two engagements with the sector Minister, Joseph Kofi Adda and the Director General of the State Interest and Governance Authority, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, to resolve the matter.

But the failed discussions, in the workers’ view, warranted their decision to disrupt flights starting next week Monday.

In the statement signed by the Minister, he said the concerns of the workers were being addressed and that the matter had even escalated to the Presidency, through the Chief of Staff, where a directive has been issued for all works on the affected lands to be ceased pending a final resolution of the concerns.

According to the Aviation Ministry, the decision by the staff flies in the face of ongoing discussions and that any decision to disrupt flights on Monday will be disingenuous especially at a time that the Coronavirus pandemic is posing challenges to the global aviation industry.

The Ministry has since assured the travelling public of its utmost support to curtail any interference to air travel, while it seeks an amicable solution to the matter.
