Five party executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region have sustained injuries after they were allegedly attacked by unknown gunmen.
They were reportedly attacked at a section between Hemang and Ejura-Tia in the Kwabre East Municipality.
They reportedly bumped into the masked armed men while returning from the residence of former Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Corporation, Alex Mould.
The executives escorted Mr Mould to his residence after going with him to perform some party activities at Ntonso in the Kwabre East constituency.
Upon reaching a section of the road which is under construction, the armed men allegedly emerged and attacked them.
According to the Ashanti Regional Deputy Youth Organizer of the NDC, Onasis Kobby who was part of the team, the armed men used the butt of the guns to hit the NDC Women Organizer for Kwabre East, Linda Dede and the Deputy Constituency Secretary, Sawadogo Mahammud.
He said two other executives managed to run into a nearby bush.
The two are, NDC Communication Officer for the Kwabre East constituency, Nana Yaw Acheampong and Deputy Organizer, Patrick Opoku.
The armed men allegedly robbed the NDC executives of their belongings which included money and mobile phones.
The five executives who sustained varied degree of injuries were all treated and discharged by the Mamponteng Government Hospital.
Mr. Mould who spoke to Citi News on the incident attributed the spate of robbery attacks on the stretch to bad roads.
He also called on government to equip police in the area to enable them intensify patrols on the stretch.
“It is true that there was an armed robbery attack on our convoy on our way home after our last polling station recruitment. So our car was attacked. There were about five persons in our car. The lady sustained some injuries because they hit her with the back of the gun but some of our guys were able to escape. Another guy had his hand hit with the back of the gun and is currently swollen.”
“So we called the police, and they got here at about 10 pm, but they came with no weapon. This area is a known area for robbery attacks. It’s primarily due to the nature of our roads. We have two Members of Parliament who stay here and a Deputy Minister, but they haven’t done anything about it.”
Meanwhile, the Mampong District Police Command says it has begun investigations into the incident.
Series of robbery attacks have occurred on the particular stretch most of which have been blamed on the bad nature of roads there.
