The Ghana Police Service says it has apprehended 29 protestors in connection with Tuesday’s violent demonstration by Arise Ghana.
“The police have arrested 29 demonstrators for their participation in violent attacks on the police and some members of the public, including school children, during the Arise Ghana demonstration in Accra.” the statement said.
According to the Police Available video footages of the event are being reviewed and all other persons identified for taking part in the attacks as well as inciting the violence will be arrested and brought to face justice.
Arise Ghana dubbed ”Krom ay3 shi” protest was against persistent and astronomical hikes in fuel prices by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government that has imposed excruciating economic hardships on Ghanaians.
The clash resulted from the refusal of the demonstrators to use court approved routes for the protest, while the police resisted the detour.
12 police officers sustained various degrees of injuries on Tuesday when they were pelted with stones by demonstrators organized by Arise Ghana.
The injured Police Officers were initially treated in Police Mobile Hospitals and have since been transferred to the Police Hospital for further treatment.
The Police, therefore, had no option but to use tear gas and water cannons to subdue the rioting and restore order.
In the meantime, “the organizers of the demonstration will be arrested and put before court for the attacks and damage to public property,” the statement added.
