The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has launched a harsh attack on President Akufo-Addo, charging him with trying to subvert Ghana’s constitution and rig the political system to the advantage of his preferred successor.
Mahama’s censure comes after Akufo-Addo made a statement stating that he would not cede authority to a rival that he had already vanquished.
On Monday, April 29, 2024, Mahama attacked the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration on Facebook, claiming that their tenure has seriously harmed the nation’s democracy.
He cited the president’s recent actions as evidence of unsettling attitudes that go against democratic principles, such as his insistence that chiefs rise to greet him.
Akufo-Addo’s comments about his successor were criticized by Mahama as haughty and anti-democratic, stressing that maintaining the peaceful transfer of power is a key component of democracy.
“The almost eight years of Nana Addo/Bawumia have done extensive damage to our democracy. As the clock ticks towards the end of his mandate, the President’s attitude and utterances give much cause for concern. His recent insistence that chiefs stand up to greet him should be a matter of serious consternation for political watchers.”
In order to demonstrate the President’s possible willingness to influence procedures to his advantage, he cited earlier incidents, such as the violence in Ayawaso West Wuogon during the 2020 election.
“Ghanaians and the National Democratic Congress will not allow this to happen,” Mahama warned Akufo-Addo. The best legacy he can leave this country with is to oversee a credible, transparent, and peaceful election, as I told him in Damongo on Saturday.
