After Ahly defeated Esperance Sportive de Tunis 1-0 in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League final on Saturday night at the Cairo International Stadium, they were crowned champions of Africa for a record-tying 12th time.
The Egyptians, encouraged by a boisterous Cairo International Stadium, entered the match with a slight advantage over the four-time African champions who are vying for an elusive fifth title since 2019. The match followed a goalless draw in Rades last week.
The only goal of the game for Ahly was an unfortunate own goal by Roger Aholou in the fourth minute after Ramy Moustafa’s header beat young goalkeeper Amenallah Memmiche after it came off the inside of the defender’s leg.
With their victory on Saturday, the champions have now won 20 straight TotalEnergies CAF Champions League games. They also have the best defensive record at the end of the season, having given up just one goal.
